Plots Twists & Pep Talks

Squeaky Wheels, Perfectionist Feels & Making Progress Anyway

Plots Twists & Pep Talks

February 25, 2025

Welcome to the second edition of Plot Twists & Pep Talks—where we embrace health tips, book banter, and questionable life choices (like letting my dog think she runs the house).

Last time, we pivoted. This time, we’re rolling with the plot twists—because if life and writing have taught me anything, it’s that plans are a suggestion, and detours make the best stories.

Speaking of stories, expect some writing wisdom, the occasional motivational pep talk, and at least one picture of my dog being cute, naughty, or ridiculously spoiled. Probably all three. I had to pay her for the pose below. The horses don’t charge me.

Anyhoo… Let’s dive in!

Words to Inspire:

"If you look for perfection, you will never be satisfied."

~Leo Tolstoy

As a recovering perfectionist, I’ve become an expert in highly necessary pep talks. (Think: “Put down the tenth draft; it’s fine” and “No one cares if the throw pillows aren’t symmetrical.”) Because let’s be real—perfection is a myth, and chasing it is just an exhausting way to delay progress. I can confirm the accuracy of this.

These days, I’m all about giving myself grace (even if it’s still a work in progress). So here’s your reminder: You are enough. Your work is enough. And if things start feeling overwhelming, it’s okay to let the squeaky wheel take the spotlight for a bit.

HEALTH HABIT/HACK:

Be Your Own Advocate

I’ve had two conversations the past week about being your own advocate—especially when it comes to health. We all know the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so whether it’s your health, your goals, or just asking for what you want or need, don’t be afraid to be that person and speak up.

No one else is living your life. You are. Make sure you’re in the driver’s seat.

Health hack: Need an urgent scan or test? Get on the cancellation list and call every day (yes, really). They love filling last-minute spots—make sure they know you’re available.

How’s the label-reading habit coming? Fun fact: The more real food you eat, the less you even want the fake stuff. Give it a minute—it’s weird but true. Fun(ner) fact: The same applies to fake fragrance. Once you notice it, you really notice it.

ON THE WIP:

The first draft of Book One in my YA/NA (young adult/new adult) small lake town romance series is officially halfway done! Titles are (probably) finalized, and I’m already playing around with cover designs. Expect stunning sunset lake views—because obviously, there will be sunsets.

Fun fact: The series setting is inspired by the small town I live in—though I’ve added a healthy dose of fiction. Think less hillbilly, more vacation-y.

This is my favorite part of the process, and I can’t wait to share more! I’m obsessed with these characters and giving them their happy ending—eventually.

Writing Tip: I’ve discovered I’m a pantser (writing by the seat of my pants) rather than a plotter (outliner). For a recovering perfectionist like me, there's relief in messily putting words on a page. Otherwise, the overthinker in me would never be satisfied enough to actually write. They say, "Done is better than perfect." And hey, that's what editors are for. Onward…

BOOKS and BEATS:

I recently had the privilege of being an ARC (advanced reader copy) reader for that indie author I shouted out last time—J.V. Reeves. Edge of Unbroken (Book Two in her series) is SO good. All. The. Feels. I binged it in two days. To-do list? What to-do list?

The genre? Young Adult/New Adult Trauma Romance. In her words, she’ll break your heart but put it back together… eventually. And let me tell you—she delivers. I’m currently nursing a brutal book hangover. If you know, you know.

If you haven’t read Tiny Fractures (Book One), now’s the time! Grab it on Amazon with this link:

Song I'm Loving (and currently singing in my head):

Cowboys Cry Too by Kelsea Ballerini & Noah Kahan

I’m loving this track because my MMC (male main character) is an expert at keeping his past trauma under wraps—for now anyway. But we're at the halfway point, so some sh--stuff is about to go down. Poor guy.

Also, still obsessed with Speakers by Sam Hunt. My apologies to anyone who’s not a country fan—though honestly, I feel like country music tells some of the best stories. It’s why I gravitate toward it for writing inspo. That said, to keep things versatile, I highly recommend checking out Teddy Swims’ cover of Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.

You’re welcome. 😉

MAD DOG MISCHIEF & SERIES FUN FACTS:

Art Imitating Life

The first photo above shows the current real-life Mad Dog with her unlikely horse friends next door. They hang out every day, unless it's raining. The photo below was snapped shortly after the first. Yep, that's her snuggled into our pillows, pollen, dirt, dog hair, and all. We’ve learned the hard way that, much like a toddler, if you don’t hear her or if she’s not at your feet demanding a snack, something’s definitely up. Good thing she’s cute! Art imitating life, indeed. (Insert eye roll.)

That’s it for now—short and sweet.

If you need me, I’ll be over here juggling self-publishing, dodging perfectionism, and trying to get my body and health back to something I actually recognize. After all the surgeries and setbacks, I’d love to say I’m bionic, but honestly? It’s more like Frankenstein’s patchwork. It’s a full-time job, right up there with wearing all the hats of indie publishing, marketing, and trying not to over-caffeinate.

Wish me luck (or send dark chocolate). Until next time!

Carol
